𝐅𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔: 𝐊𝐑𝐔 𝐒𝐢𝐣𝐨 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭
This February, Korean Rainbow United(KRU) is sharing Yook Woo Dang’s sijo throughout the month—𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐩𝐨𝐞𝐦𝐬 𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐤. We will post both the 𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐊𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐭𝐞𝐱𝐭 and an 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, so that the breath and meaning of his language can reach more people.
February is also a particularly sorrowful month for KRU. It is the month when 𝐑𝐞𝐯. 𝐋𝐢𝐦 𝐁𝐨𝐫𝐚, who helped lay the groundwork for our community to be born, passed away. As we remember and mourn her, we hope that Yook Woo Dang’s sijo can offer comfort and solidarity—not only to him, but to the many 2S-LGBTQIA+ people who have lost their lives, and to those who are still being pushed toward the edge.
May each line we translate become, for someone, a quiet testimony: you are not alone—and a small light that helps them find the strength to keep living.

As a gay person, Yun endured a great deal of homophobia until he took his own life at the age of 18. He protested social prejudice and discrimination, and his writing was part of his activism. He rejected being viewed as sinful as a devout Christian and criticized fundamental Christian perspectives in his writings.
During his adolescence, he tried to drown his pain in writing and also went to volunteer in orphanages and disabled groups. Yun hinted of the censorship present in South Korean society through his many works and stories. He often embedded satire within his poems, prose, novels and social criticism, yet still sang softly about love.
After completing elementary school, Yun wrote poetry and prose, but the majority of his work was given the notoriety to not be seen or read, due to his sexual identity. In his writings, he openly confessed his disappointment in prejudices and conventions, superstition and the remnants of judgemental faith, and the tradition of clinging to old customs, which strongly dominated the lives of many in South Korea.

(wikipedia)
